What inspires you?
I really love this question for so many reasons; inspiration is what keeps me motivated to keep going. Inspiration can be found in conversation with other business owners, creatives, friends and family. You might see your favourite clothing brand bring in new seasonal textures, magazines, your home environment. For me personally, inspiration isn't just for creativity, your whole lifestyle should be inspired.
I often write little notes detailing what's inspired me and what the looks like for my brand, Celia Loves. Sometimes they are nothing more than dreams, and other times they lead me to new paths. Being inspired is so inherently important in my brand. If I’m not inspired, then there's a disconnect in the tasks at hand. Usually, if I'm feeling uninspired, I turn to my little notes to remind me of what sets the soul on fire.
What’s the hardest thing about juggling a business and motherhood?
Another great question. Life is as hard as you make it. Carving out time to plan assists with the juggle! I can allocate business and family needs ahead of time - although let's be honest, we all know this doesn't always go to plan!! I guess the hardest part is wanting to do it all, and do it all well, all of the time. Setting boundaries helps stay present in the moment.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Very tricky question for me to answer! I have a genuine love for all things and often float between all black everything to mixed matched patterns and gold sparkle shoes!
What do you do for me time/self-care?
Such an important component in life, self-care. Speaking honestly, I tailor my self-care to how I'm feeling internally. Sometimes self-care might be quality (phone free) family time, an extra long hot shower, pilates, a walk, yoga, catching up with friends, date night or early to bed! Self-care doesn't need to be a huge effort; it's those little recharge - time out moments. Although note, consistency is the key! You can't have a 15 min life break and expect a huge difference. Consistently checking in with yourself is so important.
What are your personal goals for the future?
You guys have all the good questions! I'm not sure this will be the response you were after but I don't really believe in "goals" per se. Goals can be limiting in nature and may persuade you to not accept opportunities because you're focused on a goal. It can also have a negative impact when we don't reach goals. Instead, I work towards targets knowing that I'm not fixated on these and I assess all opportunities as they arise (or if I create them!).
What is the best thing about social media for small business?
I could talk about social media all day! It's amazing! Small businesses are on the same platform as the big players! Sure, the big players have deep pockets and can invest in huge media campaigns, but think about this, Chanel, Gucci, Michelle Obama, The Royal Family; all have the same app as you. We are ALL playing in the same field. Sure, recent changes have made it harder to reach audiences we want to be speaking to. However, to me, it's exciting because it forces alternative thinking. I love a good challenge!
Anything you wish you knew before having kids?
Before I had my first child, I thought I had to do it all and know everything. Delegating tasks is important, accepting help is important, we are all learning how to be parents so cut yourself some slack.
How do you stay motivated?
I'm not always motivated, so when I need some encouragement, I start those quick tasks to make me feel like I’ve accomplished something. This usually sparks a sense of achievement, which turns in to motivation. Also, truthfully, sometimes time out is a great way to re-energise yourself. Podcasts, talking to other creatives, accepting we can't always be "on". I try and identify why I'm feeling unmotivated or uninspired and start there. Do I need a morning off? Do I need to exercise? Do I just need to not think about work for an hour? Or do I just need to start because I feel overwhelmed?
Do you have any advice for mums wanting to start their own business?
Just start! Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Follow your own path and just start. No business was perfect when it first started.
